Summary: Two friends and I stayed at The Gatehouse for a sewing weekend. The property is an extremely pleasant and relatively easy drive from SF and the East Bay. Situated on a vineyard, the house is very private and completely isolated from the other buildings. We found it very nicely furnished and appointed with all the necessities. However, it is the outstanding architecture that really seals the deal: the light in the house is splendid. For quilters, being able to sit just about anywhere and get natural light for sewing is a plus. There is a huge floor to ceiling glass door opens on the east side of the house onto the deck so you can literally bring the outdoors right into the great room area. This would be an ideal artists' retreat or writing retreat. The solitude and lack of distraction was fantastic. Of note, we did not walk much past the main drive nor did we investigate further hiking in the area. But casual walking right from the house would be limited. The property details say that only two out of the three bedrooms are suitable for adults. Both bedrooms were lovely with really comfy queen beds. The upstairs bedroom is only accessible by a narrow spiral staircase. The main floor bedroom is beautiful. The third bedroom is below the main floor [where the television is located] is windowless and has two twin beds. But I thought it was fine and slept there one night myself. The hot tub is wood-burning was not operational [nor was the outdoor fire-pit] due to fire danger...which we heartily agreed with! However, it would be a great place to soak as the view is heavenly. In short, we were looking for a place where we could spread out our fabric, machines, ironing boards, etc and completely immerse ourselves in our craft. The house fit our needs perfectly.
