Summary: I've stayed in a lot of homes around the world. This one was perfect for my family, though it was not without its drawbacks.There were four of us there to hike in Sequoia and Yosemite. This is a perfect location for that. The house was large and had a great living room to spread out. The linens were clean, the towels new. It should be clear that this is someone's home, so you get the conditions that the owner enjoys. We all have our preferences for how we live; there were some things about this house that surprised us. There is no internet or TV. That might fit the needs of Anna and her family, but it caught us by surprise. This could have been made clear. As it turns out it was wonderful to not have everyone plugged in to computers. The refrigerator didn't work. One of the values of renting a home rather than a hotel room is that you can cook and share meals. Well, this home is pretty rural, maybe even isolated so you have to come into the house with food. Most of our first couple days food spoiled after sitting all day at room temp. The milk turned to cottage cheese. We found a work around but late in our stay. The house is in the desert and human are not the dominant species out there. The house had many, far too many, little bugs, something between ants and roaches. To many this would freak them out; to my family it was something to roll with. We've been there before. But at the cost this was a bit much to encounter. Some guests would be leaving early when bugs were on the toilet paper and towels. There were odd things like a bbq grill but no gas. A better level of vacuuming would help. Kitchen was clear and supplied with utensils. We also had two groups of people knock on the door one evening telling us that they had reserved a room for the night! As it turns out Anna runs a motel up the hill -- but in the same compound. This all worked out and actually turned out to be comical, but it interjected a bit of chaos. Last point and a sensitive one. Anna and her family are obviously Orthodox Christians. I am fine with that and tolerant of any religious affiliation. The house was filled with religious iconography, pictures of the Patriarch, Jesus and the lot. I have met the Patriarch so I respect someones devotion to religious authority, but this could be offensive to a Muslim or Jewish guest. Ultimately I would stay there again. It was great for us. Wonderful location. But clearly it is not ready for prime time and prime pricing.
